Ketika seseorang ingin memberikan nasihat (advice), kewajiban (obligation), rekomendasi (recommendation), dan opinion (pendapat), maka orang tersebut biasanya akan menggunkan should (seharusnya) dan juga shouldn’t (tidak seharusnya). A. Penggunaan Should and Shouldn’t + Verb 1.
1. The Indonesian Finance Minister should do something to avoid economic crisis.
2. The people should stay at home to avoid covid-19 pandemic.
3. Carolina, Marilia, Sisilia and Marta should go and see their best friend in the hospital.
4. The hospitalized patience should obey the doctor instruction.
5. The young teenagers should study hard to prepare their better future.
6. You shouldn’t smoke at public place.
7. You shouldn’t drive your car if you don’t have driving license.
8. They shouldn’t join the English club if their talent is Math.
9. You and I shouldn’t attend the meeting if there is no agreement between the participants.
10.You shouldn’t face the angry person because it can also be dangered for you.
Dari contoh diatas jelas bahwa pola should dan shouldn’t diikuti oleh Verb 1. Baik should + verb maupun should + verb 1 berguna untuk memberikan nasihat, rekomendasi dan juga pendapat tentang sesuatu.
B. Penggunaan (Should be + Verb Ing) dan (Shouldn’t be + Verb Ing)
1. You really should be studying hard to face your better future.
2. The government should be doing something to overcome the pandemic.
3. You should be going home earlier because your brother is sick.
4. You should be sending the email if you couldn’t join the meeting.
5. You should be helping each other in your life.
6. You shouldn’t be showing something meaningless.
7. You shouldb’t be calling me in the evening.
8. You shouldn’t be playing a game along night.
9. You shouldn’t be following the wrong way.
10.You shouldn’t be attending the meeting if you don’t know the topic.
Dari contoh diatas jelas bahwa ketika seseorang memberikan nasihat, rekomendasi ataupun opini dengan menyatakan You should be + Verb Ing dan juga shouldn’t be + Verb Ing , maka hal tersebut berarti bahwa orang tersebut ingin menyatakan bahwa cara tersebut merupakan hal terbaik yang harus dilakukan oleh orang yang dinasihatinya.
Memang pola kalimat Should be + Verb Ing dan juga Shouldn’t be + Verb Ing memang pada kenyataannya belum dilakukan, tetapi makna dan maksud kalimat tersebut adalah bahwa itulah hal terbaik yang harus dilakukan.
C. Penggunaan Should have + Verb 3 ( Past Participle ) dan Shouldn’t have + Verb 3 (Past Participle)
Untuk memahami penggunaan pola should have + verb three perhatikan contoh berikut ini:
1. We should have followed the instruction from the instructor before doing something.
Maksud kalimat tersebut adalah seharusnya kita mengikuti semua perintah dari instruktur, tapi justru kita mengabaikannya/tidak mengikuti perintahnya, sehingga membawa konsekuensi dan penyelesalan terhadap sesuatu yang seharusnya kita kerjakan/ lakukan, namun kita tidak melakukan/mengerjakannya dari orang yang kita berikan nasihat atau saran.
Begitu juga dengan contoh berikut ini:

Contoh lainnya adalah sebagai berikut:
3. You should have arrived to Jakarta two day ago. (but you didn’t go).
4. Carolina should have gotten up early to prepare her test. (but she didn’t)
5. The boy should have delivered the paper on time. (but he didn’t)
Pernyataan dalam kurung (but you didn’t go, but she didn’t dan but he didn’t) tidak harus ditulis seperti pada contoh nomor 3, 4, dan 5. Pada contoh tersebut ditulis hanya sekedar mengingatkan kepada kita semua bahwa makna dan maksuk dari bentuk sholud have + Verb 3 (Past Participle) adalah seperti pernyataan dalam kurung tersebut.
Dalam kalimat sebenarnya, ketika seseorang menasehati/mengingatkan orang lain tentang sesuatu yang seharusnya dilakukan, namun tidak dilakukan oleh orang yang kita berikan nasihat, kita cukup menyatakan dengan kalimat sebagai berikut:
1. You should have done your home work on time in order to make your teacher proud of you.
2. You should come on time.
3. Drivers should have had driving license.
4. The leader should have asked all the members in making decicions.
5. The member should have had members’ card.
6. You shouldn’t have come late.
7. You shouldn’t have woken up late.
8. The government shouldn’t have raised the fuel price.
9. The smokers shouldn’t have smoked in public places.
10.The selleers shouldn’t have sold the people daily needs too expensive.
Pada contoh nomor 6-10 bentuk kalimatnya adalah negatif. Bentuk negatif shouldn’t have + Verb 3 (Past Participle) tersebut menyatakan bahwa perbuatan/kebiasaan yang kurang baik atau tidak baik semestinya tidak dilakukan oleh orang karena akan berdampak negatif/kurang baik terhadap orang lain sehingga kita memberi nasihat atau masukan.
Bentuk nasihat dari shouldn’t have + Verb 3 (Past Participle) merupakan bentuk nasihat kita terhadap orang lain untuk perbuatan-perbuatan/ kegiatan yang tidak baik, merugikan diri sendiri dan orang lain, berdampak negatif terhadap orang banyak dan lain sebagainya.
Berikut adalah kalimat-kalimat yang menggunakan pola shouldn’t have + Verb 3 (Past Participle):
1. You didn’t come to the important meeting. Your boss is angry. You should have come to the important meeting
2. I told him to see a doctor, but he didn’t see. Now he is sick. I should have taken him to a doctor
3. You sold your car. Now you cannot take a trip. You should not have sold your car.
4. Today is rain. You didn’t wear a raincoat. You should have worn a raincoat.
5. Your friend is upset because you didn’t write him a letter. You should have written him a letter.
